Newsletter No. 6 – 4th October 2019

Dear Parents/Carers,

Next week is very busy with our Year 6 pupils going on their autumn term residential retreat to Buckden Towers between Monday and Wednesday plus other trips and workshops. As always the details of these events are listed below for your information. I am going to be with the Year 6 classes at Buckden so will not be in school from Monday morning till Wednesday evening. Ms Le will be looking after everything in my absence during the 3 days.

October

We are now into the month of October and during the month we have special prayers for Our Lady of the Rosary and will also be doing work around Black History Month. I have asked the children to try and have rosary beads in school during the month that they can use in class and assembly to pray to Our Lady of the Rosary. We will be marking the Feast itself on Monday at the school assembly.

McMillan Coffee Morning (27th September)

We held our special coffee morning for McMillan Cancer Support plus the non-uniform day and cake sale last Friday. I am very pleased to announce that we raised £338 from the day which is a great achievement so again my thanks to everyone who helped or donated in any way.

Masses and Assemblies

There is no class assembly next week and there is a list of all the Masses and assemblies for this term in the list of dates at the end of the newsletter. Parents and families are always welcome to join us for any of the Masses or assemblies.

CAFOD Harvest Day (Friday 4th October)

Today has been our annual CAFOD Harvest Day in school. As last year we have asked everyone to donate items of food which we will display in our hall for the harvest assembly and then donate to the “Eat or Heat” food bank in Walthamstow. Our School Council are going to be working with the food bank to learn about its vital role in supporting families in the borough. Please note you can continue to send in items of food up till half term on 18th October (please refer to the flier we sent home last week for suitable items to donate).

After School Activities

Please note that the Monday Computing Club for Years 3 and 4 will be held next Wednesday after school as Mrs Geoghegan will be at Buckden Towers with the Year 6 pupils on Monday

Friends’ Association AGM (Thursday 10th October )

We will be holding the Annual General Meeting of the Friends’ Association next Thursday 10th October at 7:00pm. The Friends’ play a vital role in the life of the school; not just as a fundraising body but as a social group that brings parents together and allows everyone to play an active part in the children’s education. Last year the Friends’ raised over £8,000 through events such as the Christmas Bazaar, Summer Fayre, Family Film Nights and International Day. You only have to walk around our playground to see the visible difference the Friends’ have made in enhancing the experience of all the pupils especially at lunchtimes. Unfortunately for all the good intentions of many parents, we have inevitably ended up with a small group of dedicated parents and even ex-parents doing all the work which still benefits every child in school. I personally attend all meetings and events during the year as I don’t feel I should ask you to do something I am not prepared to do myself. The Friends’ have always been important but more so now with the school having to work within a tight budget. To encourage a good and truly representative turnout I will provide a range of soft refreshments. This is one of the best ways to support your child’s school so please try and come along.

Year 4 Young Shakespeare Workshops (Thursday 10th October)

Our Year 4 pupils will be taking part in the Young Shakespeare Project this term when they will be studying “Macbeth”. The project begins next Thursday 10th October with workshops for the children in school and this will be followed later in the term by a visit to the Millfield Theatre in Edmonton to watch the play and then at Christmas the children will put on their own performance for parents. Year 4 parents will receive a letter next week with more information about the project.

After School Club

We are currently taking bookings for our After School Club which runs from 3:05 to 6:30pm each school day. Application forms are available from the school office or can be downloaded from the school website. Our prices remain unchanged so the current cost is £14 per day or £50 for a full week. We also offer an occasional ad hoc service which costs £7 up till 4:30pm and £14 up till 6:30pm.

Breakfast Club

Our Breakfast Club runs from 7:45 to 8:40am each school day, last entry being 8:25am. The cost is £3.00 per day and there is no need to book in advance. Please note there should be no children in our playground before 8:25am.

Uniform/PE Kits

Uniform will next be on sale on Wednesday 9th October from 8:50-9:30am and then every second Wednesday during the term. Please make sure all items of uniform are clearly named, this helps us return lost uniform to the correct child.

Book Fair

We held our autumn term book fair in the library recently and it was a great success, indeed one of the most successful we have had for several years. After the fair ended on Tuesday, we had sold almost £850 worth of books which means we were able to get £450 worth of free books for our library. Well done everyone.

Attendance and Punctuality

Congratulations to Class 5L who achieved 99% attendance this week and 99% punctuality. It is quite unusual for one class to achieve the highest rates for both attendance and punctuality in the same week so a big well done to all the pupils in Class 5L.

Class of the Week

Well done to Class 5O who were “Class of the Week” for being the best class at lining up for lunchtime and coming quietly into the dining room each day. They scored 45 out of 50 across the whole week.

Non-Uniform Days

So far this term we have raised over £400 for school finds and £338 for McMillan Cancer pus all the food items for CAFOD’S Harvest day today. The next two non-uniform days will be on Friday 11th October and Friday 18th October and again the children should bring in £1 on both days if they are in their own clothes.

Yours sincerely,

J Alexander (Head teacher)
